Very busy Christmas season for St Ives Community Choir

Saturday 24th Novembersaw the beginning of a very busy time for the choir, where they performed a mixture of Christmas songs at the Wyevale Garden Centre, Lelant from 2:30-3:30p.m.  Many of the songs were well known and the audience were encouraged to join in.  The afternoon was extremely wet andthe choir were glad to be performing inside the shop.  Although not a large amount of shoppers ventured out that afternoon, everyone involved enjoyed the relaxed mode, with many choirs members wearing something 'Christmassy'.

The Guildhall at St Ives was the next venue, on Sunday 2nd December, where the choir performed several pieces including the Cornish carol, 'Lo! He comes'.  This annual concert was hosted by the Salvation Army and  a large audience attended.

Tuesday 4th Decemberwas the annual Rotary Concert at the St Ives Parish Church, where the choir led the congragational singing andperformed several pieces.  This is a regular commitment for the choir.  Once again the church was packed with parents eager to see their children, as each local school performed Christmas songs.

"May I thank you on behalf of the Rotary for making Tuesday's Christmas Celebration such

a successful event....  We hope you will be able to take part next year."

The following day, Wednesday 5th December, the choir were invited to celebrate the switching on of the Carbis Bay Christmas tree lights by town mayor, Councillor Ron Tulley, outside the Methodist Chapel.  This was followed by a concert inside at 7:00p.m.

The week's busy schedule concluded with another concert.  The venue this time was Hellesveor Methodist Church in St Ives on the evening of Friday 7th December at 7:30p.m.

The Christmas engagements continued on Tuesday 18th Decemberat Towednack Parish Church, who hosted  a special carol concert, followed by light festive refreshments.  The accompanist for the evening was Una Skellington.  Rev. Elizabeth Foot, Priest in charge of Towednack introduced the event, and there were several carols sung to the accompaniment of the church bell plate ringers.

"I am writing on behalf of Towednack Parish Church to say thank you to the St Ives Community

Choir for the excellent concert you performed at the church last week.  The programme of music

was just right to make all who attended feel "Christmassy".  Please convey our thanks to the

          choir members."

Julie Curtis (Hon Sec Towednack PCC)

Friday 21st December brought a gentle, relaxing and enjoyable end to the busy Christmas schedule for those members of the choir who were available.  The St Ives branch of Barclay's Bank invited them to sing at the branch's Community Christmas Party.  Staff and customers were treated to an array of well known pieces with the aid of backing tracks.  Sherry and mince pies were abundant.  The idea was to bring a little festive cheer and it worked a treat.
St Elwyn's Church Hayle for Children's Hospice South West

"On behalf of the Hayle Group of Friends for Children's Hospice South West (Little Harbour) I would

like to thank St Ives Community Choir for the excellent concert it put on for us at St Elwyn's Church on

Sunday 16th September.  £222 was raised and the choir, under the directorship of William Thomas,

performed a varied programme with some excellent solos.

The acoustics of St Elwyn's enhanced a lovely concert which was thoroughly enjoyed by the limited

number of people in the audience.  The compere for the evening, Janette Eathorne, had us all laughing

with her Cornish stories and unmistakable local accent."

William Thomas, local organiser, said, "Our event is an expression of what can be achieved through harmony and cooperation using the medium of music and song.  It is a great opportunity to be part of the national celebrations [of the London Olympic 2012] in this beautiful setting, sitting on a blanket with a cream tea or a glass of wine while listening to Cornish voices singing from the heart.           "The St Ives Community Choir led by William Thomas sang on the stage when it was slightly

better  weather, and they entertained for 11/4 hours, Then down came the rain again plus

the wind but they bravely carried on , well done the Community Choir. A great sound from

this choir with a wonderful selection of music. The second year that they have performed

at the Festival without charging. Your talents were much appreciated."

Town Mayor Civic Service

Held on Sunday 15th April at 3:00p.m. in the St Anta & All Saints Church, Carbis Bay, the choir received the following praise:

"The choir's performance was the centrepiece of the service and the congregation really appre-

ciated the two pieces which performed.  Also, it was good to have the choir there to give such

strong support in the singing of the hymns.  It was wonderful to hear them sung so enthusiastically.

I realise how much effort the choir puts into practising and rehearsing, but it is well worth it when

it results in such a polished performance.  Do please convey my grateful thanks to all involved."
